I have a couple Fluval canisters running. The only part of them I've found to be a pain is priming them.

Other than that, mine mine have been going nonstop for a few years.

I've been running a 205 in my 32g tank for almost 4yrs, and have been quite happy with it, but like Blaine said, they are a bit of a pita too prime.

One thing I like about canister filters is I've never had one not restart after a power outage.
(Knocking on wood).
This hasn't always been the case with hang on back filters, and is one of the reasons I like to run two.

how do you prime them then?

how do you prime them then?

There is a plunger type of priming rod on top of the filter.
Pull up and push down. (X about 100).
This only has to be done upon start-up, and then when disconnecting from the hoses if any cleaning or filter media has to be changed.

Personally, I prefer the design of the Rena XP series of canister filters over the Fluval x05 series. Or, if you have more money to spend, look at the Eheims.

I like my Renas but have the following cautions:
Parts seem hard to come by these days, and this has been the case for a while.
Parts are typically sold as expensive assemblies instead of by the piece, for example the impeller shaft only comes wth an impeller.

I'm looking for a third so I can send my two back for warranty service (have case numbers, just waiting on good sale).

T_Dawg, when I was in Calgary I worked PT at Pisces and they seemed to have a better selection of Rena parts than anyone else. They weren't on display though, they keep the spare parts in bins behind and above the parts counter.

Even since they moved filter parts remain in a "must ask" back area, and presently only impeller sets are available. Rena will be sending me some canister seals....after the next production run. BA has been unable to order since aug/09.
