So I was doing water changes yesterday and was using my magnet cleaner to scrape algae off the glass of my 10G. I must have been moving it too fast because the magnet on the inside came off the glass. I held it still for a moment and the magnet pulled it back against the glass. Unfortunately, my most beautiful little red hi-fin platy decided at this exact moment to see what was going on. She swam in between the magnet and glass and was crushed to death instantly.

So let this be a lesson to everyone, be careful with those magent cleaners!

Thanks for the warning. I haven't had to use my magnet cleaner in a long time (snails take care of the glass). However, I have had the magnet come loose in the tank and have it snap back against the glass. I never ever considered that it might be a hazard for the fish.:wideeyed:

So sorry to hear about your beautiful little hifin platy. Poor thing. That's sad.

Sorry, that's a tough loss. Thanks for the warning though.

Those magnets are strong, pinched the skin on my finger once and it smarted for days.

I wouldn't have thought of that in a million years. That's too bad - I know how you fuss over those fish. :hugs: You must have been horrified.

I never liked how they banged my glass when they went back together, so now I put the inner magnet to the side of the outer one and slide it over. I was just trying to avoid cracking, but that would prevent these accidents as well.

Total freak accident, bummer man...
Maybe you should also watch out for meteors, just for a couple of days...

So glad I read this as I bought one today. I've hurt my finger already and I haven't even tried it out yet. I bought the one for an acrylic tank so maybe it won't work so well for my glass tank... or maybe it'll be better. I'll see if I ever try it out.

Sorry to hear about the poor fish too.

I had much the same happen to me quite a while back. It absolutely ruined a very nice male endler in one of my tanks.
