View Full Version : Put up the electric fence tonight

I haven't had it up for a couple of years, but I thought the big white egg (greenhouse) over the pond might make the Raccoons curious. It usually only takes a zap or two to deter them for quite a while. I know it only took me a couple of zaps to be more careful. (New Reality show; are you smarter than a Raccoon?)

 I remember the cow pasture when I was a little girl. Signs all over the place "Electric Fence". I had to touch it. My Son got a prank pen from the dollar store that gives a shock - he had to touch it. What's up with that? :Dunno:

My fence is on a timer, so that it's off during the day, but the odd time it will stick on, because the switch sticks or HAL has a glitch. The first time I got zapped, I was up to my armpits in pond and accidentally touched the wire when it should have been off. That was very tingly. :-/ The second time I was just careless and got zapped. I'm starting to worry about you two though! I did have a friend who always wanted to know if it was on, so I invited him to touch the wire with his tounge, but he never accepted. We did kill a couple of small birds though, poor guys were standing in the old waterfall and touched the top wire.

It was tripping the GFCI this morning, after the big rain. Sigh, a fishman's work is never done.

Well I didn't lick the monkey bars at school after a frost - some things I just take a person's word for. In that case, I took the word of Mitchel, who couldn't say many words at all for a few days after he tried it. A vivid memory, considering I was only six at the time.

I did, at about six too. Fortunatey, I just waited a bit and wriggled loose, without loosing too much tongue. :nah:

:wideeyed: OUCH! As for the electric fence, I just had to touch it to find out how big a zap the cattle got if they touched it.

You guys are nuts! LOL After getting zapped twice (!!!!) with 220 V in my childhood, I have more than a healthy respect for electricity. It borders on phobia...:twitcy: I won't touch an electric fence even if I see it unplugged.

It's a personality thing - I've always jumped in both feet first and I'm a curious little thing. I've learned to temper that as an adult, but not enough to get bored... or bore anyone who is unfortunate enough to be in my wacky life  .

Did that once too; my Grandfather did electric motor repair and I helped out in the shop. I was about five, when I thought it would be a good idea to stick a screwdriver in the 220 socket. Not sure why I thought that, but I did not think it again. :twitcy:

Then there was the time (age 3+) I thought it would be fun to touch the pretty Bumble Bee, did not do that again either.

LOL, catching bumble bees was a favourite past time at my daycare. Couldn't tell you how many times I got stung because I couldn't count that high then:laugh:. Obviously I'm not allergic to bee stings....

I think I'll take the electric fence over bee stings thank you.

Detritus Mulm, how's the fence working out? Got the bugs worked out?

Yeah, I had used an extension cord with one of those multi-plugs on the end and it rained hard that night. It got wet inside and tripped the GFCI. I just changed the cord and put it all in a plastic box for now. I'll mount it to the fence (wooden one) when I get some time to make it pretty.

Sounds great! Glad too that you had a GFCI on it... don't want to think of you getting a serious jolt. :wideeyed:

Well, how are things going at the pond? Is the electric fence doing the trick to keep those pesky raccoons at bay?

Seems OK, water's getting kinda putrid with the small filter. I did not want to turn the filter on yet, but I think I'm going swimming this weekend. Fortunately the water is warm with the Greenhouse, the trouble will be keeping it there.

Found a dead Rabbit in the yard, hopefully he did not get zapped; I expect the neighbours are trying to poison the world again. This fence does not seem as strong as the old one, DAMHIKT, but I did hear a Raccoon complaining one night. :-)

I doubt the little bunny suffered an ill effects from the fence. I certainly hope the neighbors aren't poisoning animals though. I realize that often areas have rabbit problems due to people having released their pet rabbits over the years. Population increases when there aren't or are insufficient predators. Howver, poisoning them isn't the solution and pets and other animals may end up being casualties.

Hopefully the temps will rise and you won't freeze in your 'underwater pump adventures' this weekend.

Thanks, Pond is 70°, so it will be like swimming in the pool from ****. It will be difficult to keep it there though, once the Greenhouse cover comes off. I found a dead Wakin today, so I did a massive water change (killed my evening).

Sorry to hear of your loss... hopefully the big water change will keep everyone else doing just fine. (Lost evening?... your fish will appreciate you for having done that.)

Drained out most of the water; just left enough to come up to my knees. I removed the planter the 'coons dumped in last fall, some Hair Algae and a edging stone that got knocked in when the cover came off. It all went pretty quick and the fish did not seem to care. The water was fairly pleasant, except for when I had to squat down to check the bottom drain. Oooh. I think the Duck Shoes will smell like Pond for a while though. :err:

Took forever to refill; no leaks when I reconnected the plumbing and opened gates for the bottom drain. Even the new UV connections came up leak free. This year's upgrade will be a valve on the return, so I can switch between 'waterfall' and below water return (TPR). This should let me start up the filter sooner, without losing too much heat to the air.

The fish seem happy to see the world again and are enjoying their 'waterfall' again.

Glad to hear all went 'swimming'-ly well. There's always that worry when you reconnect all the plumming that you'll suddenly discover a leak somewhere.

I'm sure the fish are thrilled to have their waterfall back. I don't know what it is about that but fish seem to love to play in water cascading down (be it a waterfall or just the outflow of a filter (if there is a bit of a drop for the water to cascade down).

Now it's time to air out your duck boots and sit back, relax and enjoy. ::D:
