View Full Version : Adjustable/removable tank dividers

I'm considering dividing my 20g fry grow out tank to maximize space and maybe use a portion of it for a couple of females. UC there are juvie males in there who with whom I don't want the females to mate (ruins the who breeding program UC).
However, I don't want to do anything rather permanent which requires silicone because I'd like to be able to move the divider around to change the size of the divisions. I would also like it to be a perforated divider so that fry can escape... even maybe use 2 dividers to create a 'fry area'.
Any suggestions?

Go buy a divider ;) . There's really not much else you can do without silicone to my knowledge. I think the dividers run about $8 @ Petsmart.

Hey, I know that's an option. I just thought I'd pick the creative brains around here. OMG, I put my foot in my mouth on that one, didn't I? (You're creative... I meant other creative brains. I think I had better stop now before I'm in bigger trouble than I already am. ):BOLTS:

Mr. BC_Kron gave me a large sheet of this perforated food-grade plastic. It won't leech chemicals into the water so it would be safe for the fish. The holes are pretty small but you could easily cut/drill some bigger holes in it and cut a piece to fit your tank. Just place a few suction cups in the tank side by side and on opposite sides of the tank and slide a piece of this plastic in between them. I won't need the entire sheet he gave me so you are welcome to half of it if you want.

Thanks Mr. GP. I like the suction cup idea for positioning. Will PM you.

for a another option, go to a craft store and get a couple plastic cross stitch sheets, then head over zellers or wherever and get a package of project covers with the plastic bars that slide over to give it stability and just use the bars on the sides of the cross stitch sheets. It works for 10g's anyway, they probably carry bigger sheets, just measure the tank ahead of time. and the project covers come in legal size as well.

Those plastic cross stitch sheets will have lots of small holes if they come in a large enough size. Thanks for the idea.

ROFL I'm creative, not psychic - how should I know what you know?
The project cover option is in the frugal tips section, but I don't know how stable it would be without silicone. I suppose you could combine the two ideas and use the suction cups.

If you take two pieces of 1/2 - 3/4 diameter pvc, a little shorter than the height of your tank, (inside dimension) and dill a hole in oppositer ends, (on the same face) nIstall suction cups into these holes. Cut a slice from one end of the tube to the other, on the directly opposite face, to slide the perf into. Now attach to glass. Voila. Hopefully you find that as easy as it seems

I picked up Penn Plax dividers at Big Al's here, they come with metal clips that hook over the tank. One side is straight that goes into the divider to hold it in place while the other side goes over the tank. I use them to divide my male bettas in 10 gallon tanks but they do come bigger. The snails love to climb them.
Similar to what I have: http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA/ctl3664/cp17331/si1317044/cl0/leesaquariumdivider1520long Just enlarge the picture and you can see the clips.

That wouldn't be too difficult... even with the limited tools I have.

My canopy rests on the inside wip of the tank... not sure if the clips would work. I'd have to check.

Thanks to everyone for your input and suggestions! :D Now all I have to do is to decide which option will work best.

ive seen people use that egg crate plastic (for larger tanks) but as for securing it i have noticed a few people have either sloped the gravel up to it or used large rocks to secure the bottom.

Thanks Mr. GP. (& Mr. BC_Kron) for the plastic. As you know this is the route I went. Because I have fairly deep gravel in the tank I only put suction cups at the rear top of the tank. No need to drill any holes. It works great and the tiniest fry swim right through from one section to another which is great (except when you are trying to net fry in one section of the tank and at the same time keep some plumetails in another section.
Today, I finally added hornwort mostly near the dividers (so wee ones have a place to hide if they swim through a hole and find a big mouth ready to munch on the other side.
It's like having three small adjustable size tanks in one!
