Breeding for specific color and finnage traits is extremely interesting but always a challenge. After all, first of all the fish have to agree to mate...lol. I have a beautiful Redwag female platy who is obviously fertile (every male in the tank was eager to impregnate her). So I put her and one of those males (red hifin male) in a separate tank in hopes that the two would mate. I'd love to get some Hifin Redwags from her.
However. although I think he is a stunning male (deep red, beautiful finnage) she wants nothing to do with him. (He on the other hand... well, enough said). She simply will not let him near her. Nothing wrong with him. He has fathered many fry for me. .She too has given birth to a number of batches of fry. Obviously, her tastes and mine differ.
