One of my medium sized Amecas dropped today. For a large fish she did not have many fry, only 12, however they are all around one inch long and pretty robust.

Congrats on the fry! I've never kept amecas so have never seen newborn fry but have heard they are very large. Glad to hear they seem to be doing well. Any chance of pics of the fry?

You won't see the numbers out of Goodeids that you'll see out of Poecilia, but that's a good thing as a rule. Congrat's!

One of my faves, Good Show !!:notworthy:
Try them in a nano pond this summer - they love it.
With the enormity of Ameca's one is enough :frown:
. A dozen is great! I have rarely seen more than that.

Cinco de Mayo - "the fifth of May"
Perfect timing - I guess your little Mexicans also won their battle on this day !!

I haven't the foggiest who Cinco De Mayo was but he must have had a tremendous victory, since I have 7 or 8 more females in the same tank that should drop within a week. I haven't really been paying two much attention to the tank in the living room so I don't know how many Amecas are due there, but there are about 20 new Red tailed Goodeid fries swimming around.

 They're taking over! Well they must be happy. Do you have a pedigree for the Eiseni? Someone was looking for Eiseni with collection data recently, is why I ask.

No pedigree for the Eiseni. I originally bought 6 juveniles at an Edmonton auction around 2002, of which 1 female and 3 males survived to adulthood. From these originals I probably have about 70 in my tanks and have given away somewhere just short of about 1000.

cool
I cant wait to see ameca fry.
Its funny because I am so excited now but after a few drops I will be wondering how to get rid of them lol.
Someone mentioned a pond... do they do well in an outdoor pond in the summer??

As long as it stays cool enough - Goodeids like it cooler than most. Mine always did fine during heatwaves but I don't know how well they'd cope over the long term.
They'll enjoy the insects and keep the algae in check.

I usually throw my extras in an old clawed bathtub once the weather is warm enough. They do just fine. In the house I keep them in tanks without heaters. Right now I have some extra juveniles in a tank on the basement windowsill. It's probably pretty cool (temp is about -17 outside today) there but they don't seem to mind. Does slow their growth rate though.

Vindiaction. At least on of the fry is 1 inch. It's not the large female that dropped, but a medium sized female. Can't wait to see the size of the fry the large female drops.

The only problem I have faced with goodeids is keeping them cool enough. The skiffia group almost requires a tank chiller where I live because they really do not do well in warm water. In summer my tanks easily reach the upper 70s F without a heater. The Skiffia seem to suffer when that happens and I have seen some deformed adults that started out looking just fine after a warm spell. I am not sure it is the temperature but the temperature is the only thing it seems to be related to. All other factors have been constant and the younger fish in the tank seem to be fine and develop normally.
