We are looking @ 29 C today and I had been itching to get my nano pond back outdoors.

Luckily, I had some time this weekend and managed to get it done !

I did things a little differently this year and decided to plumb in a sump. I also changed the locations in the yard and as such the set-up will be getting a little more direct sunlight. I know tempurature can jump up in the sunlight so I am keeping an eye on that. I have had Ameca's hover near forty C. for sometime so we will see.:radar:
One advantage to having the sump buried to ground level is the natural cooling I will get from the good earth.

I picked up a 50L bag of hydroton earlier this spring and I am looking forward to hanging some marginal pots to see if I can have any luck with emmersed growth.

I will get some photos of the set up ; it really was to easy. Two hours start to finish.
It drives my kids nuts - but - our gonna laugh when you see just how frugal I can be.

As we just cleared to the last of the snow , for now we are for now misquto free. I almost forgot how rewarding the pond is. I lingered long into the night sitting with my wife and enjoying the sights and sounds of one - long awiated - beautiful premier. :SoHappyICould...:

Ahhhh, to just sit back and enjoy the pond on a warm evening (without bugs)... makes me long for a backyard with a pond. Can't wait to see pics.

I love that no bugs comment. For me, the fish provide the mosquito control that I need and I provide a bit of fish food from time to time in exchange.
Has anyone here tried putting Xenoophorus captivus outdoors? I just put all of my adult and juveniles out while keeping most of the fry that were under a week old in the tank. I am hoping they will do well for me this summer. So far I have found goodeids in general to be a good choice for a tub type pond like mine. This will be my first time with X captivus but last year it was Xenotoca eiseni and the year before I set out both domestic mollies and Xenotaenia resolanae.

Exactly a year to the day !!

I had to dig up this thread just to check the date. I finished the plumbing on the nano-pond last night. Temp is averaging over 14C, so I figured it was time.

Just to mix things up this year I added an over-the-top primary drain. I am using the bottom bulk head with a standpipe as the secondary. The primary drain has been gated to syphon draw about 90% of the flow. The secondary is capable of handling 100% of the flow; this is crucial beause the primary will not self prime or restart during an emergency ( power-outage, curious child ) I could quite it down even more by sending all I can down the primary; although I do like a bit going down the standpipe as this provides topdraw/surface skimming. Outdoors this becomes more imparative as airborne dust and [Southern Alberta] debris quickly scums up the surface.

Where ever he is - I think Herbie is shaking his head.

It is going to be a great week-end.

and it can be pretty effective control, too. Mosquitoes weren't much of an issue when I had the ponds running. Spent many an evening out there watching the stars, and nary a bite.
