Ive had this java fern for about 2-3years, and this is the 5 time ive taken the wood out to trim it cuz its gets too big to fast. im running out of room in all my tanks ;). but recently ive noticed that the leafs have been shooting off in more then one direction ether at the base of the leaf or the top of it. and this doesnt happen on any others so i think its just a size thing where it doesnt want to creat anymore stems. or maybe i mutated it with extreme radiation LOL. but it looks cool, if its a new thing i think ill name it the java fern(Trident bush) cuz it makes it really bushy or something like that:laugh: what do you think??

This is probably worth investigating. In "dry" horticulture, a new variety of plant can be worth millions...

:D millions hey.
i think ill wait abit till it morphs somemore cuz right now only 1/4 of the leafs are doing that

Could it be because part of the plant is grown partially emmersed? I've read that there can be differences between the land versions and water versions of the same plants, but I don't know much more than that about it.
We will be naming it Melody Javafern of course - MJ

You absolutely should. That photo came up in Google as on Aquatic Plant Central, so maybe you could ask there about it.

even your completely submerged java fern is doing that?
Mine are just single leaved!
Corbin

yeah even the submerged ones, so that means it has nothing to do with being emersed... must be in the dna. maybe ill have some for sale if this is true soon.

haha..... I had the same thing happening to my java ferns too! I found that particulalry happened to the ones near the surface but it occurred through out the plant also. Cool though.

Well I am pretty new to fish keeping but I have been growing plants for a long time, mostly orchids and other epiphytes including ferns. What you are seeing is the mature form of Microsorum pteropus which is commonly called Java fern. Many species of fern start off with simple leaves that become more complex and divided as the plant matures. If a Java fern is left to grow undisterbed without the growing tips of the rhizomes being removed or the plants divided they will develop the divided leaves. Many of the terrestrial Microsorum species have similar leaves while others retain the strap shaped leaves even at maturity.
Here is a good photo from the web showing a large mature Java fern.

There is a trident java fern that I have. It's really cool as it has rounder leaves but so far hasn't gotten that big. I've never seen it in a store and got mine from the US.
