Last fall I burried a claw tub in the garden with the intent of using it for a water fall. Instead I threw some of my excess Amecas, red-tailed goodeid, red swords and mollies in this summer. I can only see the fish if they are at the surface in an area not covered by plants. I know I still have a couple of months before summer is over but it just dawned on me that I'm going to have a hard time recovering the fish.

Make a large feeding ring with no plants inside the circle, throw food in the circle, use a big net to feed & scoop. ::D:

I agree - plain coloured fish are a pain to catch in a pond. I've got a 50 gallon seasonal pond that houses weather loaches and gold white clouds.
At the end of the season, I lower the water level and take out the white clouds and weather loaches and move them back in the house.
What I did last year was to fill it again and let it run until it got quite cold, then emptied it completely for the winter. I found a couple of fry that I brought in that had obviously hatched after the parents were taken out. The fry were tiny, so I poured out the water carefully when emptying it.
I think this year I'll catch the white clouds in early Sept and pull the pond down a month or so later - perhaps more fry will have hatched with slightly warmer weather.
