So .... I cant get another tank ...but ....school is around the corner and I baby sit often and am always looking to amaze kids ...they are so cute when they are interested in "stuff"

So I was thinking ...of getting a clear container ...(a big one) and just have it on the floor (near the video games) and have the snails in it ....but see through is a must to catch their attention and food grade(with a lid) ....I have ordered a few extra corner filters one for mostly the bio I will put in the AC bio media and one just for padding maybe carbon ?
This way it may take their attention from video games and We can even investigate and hold them and even see the eggs that are layd.

Sure that coffee table tank is a great idea but then its another tank I cant do ...

You think the snails would be ok (melody )
I have been hunting the perfect container with a lid and poke holes ,this way the dog cant drink the water and or eat the snails ....

oh just an idea ... but when I leave We can just move it as is :-)

I think it would be awesome for the kids ,esp if they can be hands on !

I don't see any big issue with it, as long as the small children can't get the lid off (drowning hazard) and there's no heater (electrical hazard), and hubby doesn't mind (divorce hazard) . It also may be tough to clean - it takes more syphoning power to bring it up if it's lower than the sink. If you have lots of water pressure and a python, that shouldn't be an issue. Low tanks are hard on my back so I stopped doing that.

Good luck finding a large clear plastic container though. Everytime I've looked, I can only find semi-transparent at best.

Thanks melody ...
I have a container ....I am unsure about ...it is big I keep my sheets and blankets in .
The only thing that worrys me with something that big is water leaking ...I think it said 105 litres.
...But I think once I put water in it will expand and wont be able to snap the lid on ...... if I stack 2 containers that may help but then make it harder to see .
No heaters ...not after my explosion ....I have heaters only on 2 tanks they are the hydor flat no glass :-)

I am going to test it tomorrow!
yep have a tap python .... maybe not take lid off with kids that cant swim !

You're right, it probably would bow out, I didn't think of that. :wideeyed: I'm not sure how the water pressure would convert to leakage potential.. but nothing says you have to fill it all the way up either.

here I was thinking ,monday I will be able to "set it up "
because I just ordered the filters right ?
WRONG....I dont know how they even did that ...mops accepted only at 615 this morning....filters here at 1145 am ???

I'd like to know how they did it too - I can't even get a box to arrive in under five days when the destination is 20 minutes away...LOL.

Purrrrrfect !
I will attach pictures after Alain has to do that .

I put water in it and I have this awesome piece that could possibly imitate what the snails do in the wild .... lay their eggs on long stalks of bullrushes ?
I will have to cut some holes in top as it is tall ..then stuff any spaces with filterfloss .
perfect timing as well as I am tearing a tank down to set up for shrimp ...so I will take that whisper 40I and hang is with coated wire instead of 2 corner filters ...will wait 24 hours ....then start putting in ....I am in fact going to put a heater rated for a 5 gl ...and affix it to the "thing" it is one of those flat heaters so should be very safe ,and not too hot .
It is the perfect container ,once I added water it is very clear .....will be cute to see the kids all lined up laying on their bellies watching ...
This is good and any excess plecs can go in here :-)
and when I move I will just take out the deco lower the water and off we go !
Plants are on the way very soon and it will be perfect .
So this isnt tech a tank  ....so I have stuck to my word??? lmao

The kids are going to love this!

Yes mam he is actually falling for this :-)

well there is a tank I would like to get ... 75 gl with stand, equipment ,gravel ... just for the snails

but no way I can move the tank ...HOW WOULD i GET IT HERE , sling it over my back lol
then cant take it to nova scotia ....oh and then where would I put it ......

Well we will see .....I have a very good stand with space for more tanks in the back ...but then I would have to move it so you can see both sides ...
oh gee if I could get a 60' x 12 x12 that would be perfect ...i better stop ...Or I will break my rule

Yep ... she is in the bucket 20 times a day playing with the snails its funny ...I will try and get a vid but she knows when I am on to her ..
she was adding more snails today ..
I really like not having to worry about her bugging fish or breaking glass ....Glad we tried this .
cant wait for the plants to arrive ....I am going o try and get out see if I can get some rocks ......
the best part is we dont have to remove eggs as it is moist enough and we can watch :-)

Well .... 4 dead snails , I have no clue but I suspect it is the new snail we got ...
We moved all the snails back to the tank ,julie let the new snail crawl on her hand and she said it bit her ?????:wideeyed:

So with permission ,we will be shopping for a new tank :-)
I would like one them new ones and maybe get a screen instead of a hood ....
We had 7 clutches hatched and all are very active now ....
I finally figured the way to hatch live snail .....yehhhhhh

tonight after moving all the snails ... was cleaning and moping as I do my cleaning after everyone is in bed .
After that I was doing small waterchanges and julie woke up ....I lifted the lid where the snails are and one of our original snails was laying eggs and we got a good vid of it ...
so cool to see one egg at a time being laid .will post when Alain gets home .
julie said see thats the reason why I woke up :-) to see that !
set up another small tank for the babys now !

I think I have a problem !
We moved all the snails , we checked each and every one they all seemed fine .
Now from my experiance when my snails have died in the past ,I never know it is dead because it closes up after a day or 2 I will check it out .
this morning we find a fairly large snail ripped out of its shell ?
and julie and i went to bed late ...
I now have a feeling the new snail is killing them ....

is this possible ?

tonight I will take "killer" (we named it lol) out maybe keep it out a few days .
then put it back and see what happens after lights out ?

We have fed it well ,so I cant see this as a hungry thing ?

any thought plz and thanks

No, I don't think that's the issue. They will fall out of the shell after they've started to decay though, and the other snails will eat them then. They're not aggressive towards their own or other species. There is one species that's aggressive.... ummm.... it'll come to me eventually...lol. They're Pomacea but not Diffusa/Bridgesii, and not commonly found in the trade.

Make sure they're not being handled too much - it does stress them, they just can't express it well.

I took that snail out and put it in with the corys , and not one snail death so far (knock on wood)
but I am telling you that is one EVIL snail ....
I had some loose leaves from planted so thought I would test it .... it ate them in no time and not only that julie and I watched it and the thing has HUGE teeth .....well when julie said it bit her I was of course are you sure? I always believe what she tells me but it just seemed to far fetched .... I totally believe her now ,in fact I am surprised she wasnt bleeding lol
As julie was watching she said omg mom it bit the cory I saw it I swear ...I look and sure enough the cory was bleeding .........OH BOTHER what am I going to do with this bigger !
Looks like we picked a good name for it "killer"
Never in my life :spinny:
