Scientists at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute "have created the first frozen bank for Hawaiian corals" . Apparently, frozen coral cells (eggs and sperm) are viable and can be thawed at any time in the near or distant future to help replenish or restore a species.
