So I find some tiny flying insects on top of the water. :mask: They are about 3mm in size. Apple green in color with clear wings. I also find tiny worms in the water, and I saw them hatch from the worms. Does anyone know what they are? They do no harm but when I open the glass top, they fly everywhere. I keep killing them but they keep reproducing. Daily water change doesn't do much to their population. I feed less but it doesn't help either. Any input of how to get rid of them will be greatly appreciated!!

Could be a gnat of some variety I suppose. Seems to me that Mr. Mykiss answered that question once but I can't remember the answer. You could PM him  .

Its that time of year I'm afraid, at least here. If you have floating plants you can try clearing them out temporarily, disinfect them and leave them out for a bit. Clean the top of the aquarium where the food and algae collects between the waterline and brim.

Up your water movement if you can.

Good luck!

No floating plant nothing. Only java fern on drift wood. But they can stay on top of the water:mad: I clean the waterline and even clean the glass top completely. For some reason they always come back and haunt me.......... :twitcy::err:

GNAT? lnteresting :wideeyed:

I think I have a bookmark for everything....lol...check out this page (http://naturalaquariums.com/inverts/flies.html) on flies in Aquariums.

Garlic is supposed to be a natural repellent for flies & the like. Try a drop or two - it won't hurt the fish. I can't remember how far you are from me, but if you are close enough that a drive is worth it I would be happy to give you a garlic capsule or two to try. Hate to see you buy a whole bottle just for that.

They do prefer stagnant water as a rule, so upping the water movement might be all it takes. Put an airstone in temporarily or turn up the filtration.

Thanks for your info, Melody! I will try upping the water movement first. If all else fail, I will sure come for a visit;) I added some salt couple days ago. For some reason the number of gnat decreased. I am not sure if this is just coincident.

Good thinking! I don't imagine they would appreciate salt.
