View Full Version : Lighting overkill?

So I just downgraded the lighting on my 30G cube from a 96W PC to 4 x 15W screw-in CF bulbs (Philips Daylight). If anything, the tank now looks even brighter than before.

I now have the 96W (6700K) quad light strip sitting there and I'm thinking of putting it over a 10G with Eco-complete and DIY CO2. The goal would be to grow a lawn of HC or glosso. Would this be too much lighting? Would I just be setting myself up for a tankful of algae? I'd appreciate input from anyone who's tried using that much light before.

96w over a 10g would be pretty hard to keep under control I think.
I had 216w of T5 6700 over a 40g and I've cut it down by half since...
It was persistent greenwater that eventually necessitated a rethink of the light.

Oh, in case anyone was wondering, 96W of PC over a 10G is WAY too much light! I put it over my tank last night just to see what it would look like. I think my poor betta still hasn't quite gotten over the sun burn yet. It would be cool for growing very light intensive plants but I don't think any FW fish would be happy in a tank that bright.
