View Full Version : Energetic Dandee: Update July 5

My mare Dandee has been stall bound for the last five weeks due to the vets orders. She has had some lameness issues with a front leg. The vet has taken xrays which didn't show anything other than her pastern has a bend to it. I had not noticed that before. Anyway, after the exam, lameness tests, and xrays, the vet figured that Dandee's ligament on that leg is causing the issues. He wanted Dandee on stall rest for 4-6 weeks with no turn out. After that if she is still lame, then it is back to the vet to have the leg ultrasounded as the issue isn't her ligament then.

Long story short, I let Dandee out a week ago to see how she was. First time out of the barn in four weeks :wideeyed:. Dandee is a pasture horse. The longest she has ever been in the barn is for a week during foaling season and even then she was always turned out during the day.

Well, needless to say, Dandee was a little energetic when I took her out of the barn. I ended up setting her loose in the round pen to watch her move. Unfortunately, she is still lame. So it was back into the barn with her and another appt made with the vet.

Today I let her back out into the round pen so I could quickly do a complete clean out of her stall. I do clean it everyday but it was due to be cleaned right out and started fresh again. Once again she was just full of energy. I managed to snap some photos of her.

She of course had to have a good roll in the dirt first

Then she took off hopping, bucking, and farting.

Dandee is going on 11 years old. I've had her since she was three months old. She is here for life. I just hope we can figure out this lameness issue. At the first vet visit the vet did mention that her trim job wasn't the best, her angles were off and her weight isn't distributing evenly on that hoof. He said that could be contributing to her lameness as well and he thinks it might help if she had a wedge show put on. After I got home I took some photos of her hooves and really looked at them. That was when I noticed that her feet were not trimmed very good at all getting down to ground level to have a look. I checked out the other horses and theirs are not done well either. So I'm no longer using that farrier. I found a new one that has a lot more experience and has some great references. He is coming tomorrow morning.

I did have another vet appt for Dandee on Monday but I'm canceling for now. I'll see how this farrier does trimming her and give her a week and see if there is any improvement with her lameness. If there isn't, then it will be back to the vet with her. I hope this farrier can help her.

I couldn't help but chuckle at the pictures of Dandee when you let her out. She was having such a good time! I could sense her pleasure at just being able to be out and run around and have some fun. I sure hope you find out what's causing her to be lame. Getting a new, more experienced, ferrier might be a big step in the right direction.

That horse doesn't look lame!!!! She looks like a little kid (foal). My sister in law has horses and while I have never been a horse person, there is nothing like standing next to one.

I know very little about horses, but I hope all turns out well for dandee and the lameness. She looks like a nice horse.

Any animal that can be lifted off the ground by farts like that is a beast worth admiring (from a distance)!

I hope this farrier can help Dandee.

Thank you!

The new farrier came out and did a great job with her feet. It will take a couple more times to get them where they should be. He balanced them out and she does seem better. I will give her a week and check again. Hopefully this has helped.

She is beautiful!!! And must have had a blast when you let her out, you can see it in the pictures.

Glad to hear this farrier is better, lets hope it fixes her!

I know it hasn't been that long, but are there any signs of improvement? Sure hope so. She's such a beautiful horse... and so full of life.

Thanks Jay. She will always have a special place in my heart.
I was hoping to get her out today to see if she has improved but that was postponed due to winter weather arriving. :realmad: If the snow lets up for a bit tomorrow I hope to get her out if I can find a spot that isn't too slippery for her as she is going to want to run around bucking and farting again.

Yes, you definitely have to be careful if it's slippery out there. She's definitely going to want to kick up her heels.

After another two weeks in the barn and her balanced trim, Dandee isn't showing any lameness! She has been turned out with the others.

didn't know I had a jumping horse :err: (at the end)

Loki (dog) is not chasing her. He likes to run with the horses. As you can tell, Dandee is not concerned with him at all.

That's great news! ::D: Dandee looks like she's just loving racing around. After being cooped up in the barn, it's easy to understand her excitement of being able to be outside. Loki looks like he's having just as much fun.

Good good. I know nothing of horses, live in the city and didn't know about hoof trimming issues. I didn't know what a farrier is. I had never considered the fact that those beautiful animals in the cowboy films actually were inclined to fart. But I've been wandering about my every day business wondering how that poor horse was doing.
I think Dandee has become the official adopted horse of the CAC...

So wonderful to hear she is doing great!!! And by the video she looks so PROUD to be running around out there!!!

My daisy needs to do that every morning!!! just to burn "puppy" energy LOL.

Congrats.

Thanks everyone. Dandee is still doing great and is much happier being back in the pasture.

I'll bet she's much happier being back in the pasture. It's hard to keep an animal cooped up in the barn (even if necessary for their own goo) when they're used to funning free outdoors.

No new videos but my son did take a couple new photos of Dandee for me (I'm always holding the horses for him to take the photos  )

I can't believe she is 11 yrs old already

The lameness with her leg/foot comes and goes even with good balanced trims on her. It had gone away for awhile but came back after a ride. I think after this summer she is going to be entering an early retirement due to that. It is a shame as she is such a great riding horse but her health will come first. She will just be a pasture puff. I'm sure she won't mind.

She's a beauty and very lucky to belong to someone who pays close attention to her health and is willing to sacrifice a wonderful ride to ensure she doesn't come up lame again.
