I want to get involved with some of the environmental clean-up & conservation programs this year because frankly, I need the excercise...lol. I volunteer anyway, so I might as well be doing something that keeps me active.
My girlish figure is second only to my desire to help make a difference on this abused ol' planet of ours and the creatures living upon it. Invasive plant species is one thing I'm thinking about tackling. I figure I don't even need a formal organization for that one - just get a group together, print some pic's from the 'Net for ID and go at a nearby park. Hopefully I won't get arrested.
If you really want to get ambitious, there are often conservation grants available, like BC's Habitat Conservation Trust Fund (http://www.hctf.ca/pubcon/index.html).
As I explore the possibilities I thought I might as well list what I find, in case anyone else would like to become involved. If you know of any Canadian organizations which utilize volunteer power to make a difference to our Environment, please post them as well. Programs & funding can be found at the National, Provincial and even Municipal level.
{BC} River Works (http://www.riverworks.org/) - River Works is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program that inspires the stewardship of aquatic habitats through public involvement, monitoring activities, habitat restoration, educational experiences and community connections.
{BC} Restoring Streams to Help Coho Salmon (http://en.arocha.org/conservation/index29.html)
{BC} Burns Bog Conservation Society (http://www.burnsbog.org/involved/volunteer.shtml)
{NS} Ecology Action Centre (http://www.ecologyaction.ca/volunteer.shtm)
{National} David Suzuki Foundation (http://www.davidsuzuki.org/WOL/Challenge/default.asp)
I'll add more as they come up. You can also keep an eye on the Volunteer sites, such as Volunteer Canada (http://www.volunteer.ca/index-eng.php) & Charity Village (http://www.charityvillage.com/applicant/volunteer.asp).
