At all of my aquarium society meeting we have dooprizes, and we had this guy come in a speak to us, who has bred killies for like 30 years. He brought in like 4 different types of killies,,, all breeding pairs. All were beautiful. I had planned on a different type but they gor scooped up before me. So i got A.schioetzi which are just amazing!

Here are some pics of my pair..

I also won an old 15 gallon tank, but i traded it for some mollies. I wasn't allowed to keep the tank anyways.

My mom promised me i could get a 2.5gallon for them... Somehow i walked outof the store with a 5.5 gallon this afternoon. :)

They're close, but not quite Livebearers. Livebearers are live-bearing toothcarp and Killifish are egg-laying toothcarps. There are a couple of species of Killifish that even have a gonopodium and Livebearers are thought to have evolved from them. I can't imagine spelling which species they are, let alone remember them both, so don't ask...lol....one is Cynopoecilus but I can't remember the other one.

Beautiful fish to be sure. Do a Google image search on Killifish and you'll be floored.

Nice prize! Nicer Mom!

guess what i woke up to this morning...

A dead male killifish and very coudy water

:Dunno:i dunno what happened, i used gravel from a cycled tank, filter media from a cycled tank, even a small amount of water from a cycled tank even though i have heard it doesnt do much. This is really dissapointing
:(

I'm really sorry to hear about your lil guy. It is a heartbreak for sure to lose such a beauty.

This is me knowing nothing again... do you have breeding pairs? Might you have fry in the future?

That's so sad and so disappointing for you, WaterPond. I don't know about would cause the cloudy water but that to have a fish die that quickly one wonders if it was sick when you got it.

Well, it came right from this guy who is a well known breeder in my area (for the life of me i can't rmeber his name!)

This is actually the second type of killifish species i have ever kept. I only had one pair, which is now just a single female.

I am going to wait until our aquarium societies big auction and i might just splurge and get a bunch of different types of killies and try my hand at breeding them.

I told my freinds at school that i was kindof PO'd today because i lost a fish, and they were like

them: "so you killed it?"
me: "no it died"
them: "well, it was in your care so that means you killed it"
me: "no, it was in my care, and it died."

You can really count of freinds to make you feel better, no?

Well, at least your friends here at CAC totally understand. :grouphug: All of us have lost fish. Often it's hard to figure out the cause... especially if they have shown no signs of illness.

I'm glad to see it's not discouraging you from getting some more and trying your hand at breeding them.

I'm sorry to hear that. Try to remember the breeder's name and call your club chair to see if you can get his contact information. He will probably at least sell you another male.

In the pic's he's laying on the gravel so I'd say he was either ill or not acclimating well. Killies are often kept in soft, acidic water. The breeder could probably help you out there too.

Make sure you're prepared for 'a bunch' of Killies if you decide to buy them - most of the males can't be kept together so you'll need tanks for each pair. I've heard mixed accounts of them being raised together, but the majority reports that they're like Bettas - males have to be raised separately after a certain age or they fight.

son't know how soft the water was, beut it was acidic for sure. My test kit was reading about 6.2 for pH.

He was laying on the gravel, yeah... i acclimated him for about an hour.

At the club meeting he was in the bag for nearly 3 hours... plus the breeder came from around windsor i beleive so thats like another hour and a half.

And he was in a tiny amount of water. about 1/8 of a cup of water.

I'm sure the stress didn't help, but fish are shipped all the time for days. The amount of water is standard - air is more important. Maybe if you can find him he can shed some light on things and/or bring you a new one the next time he attends a meeting.
