View Full Version : Needlepoint Mesh?

How stiff is Needlepoint mesh on average? I want to put a cage around my Lotus to keep the GF out and the price of 'fish related' mesh is ridiculous. So I thought some Needlepoint mesh might do the trick. The cage would be about 8-9 inches across (25" diameter) and as tall as the tank.
Would this work or would the fish just collapse it and injure themselves in the process. The other problem is that the fine mesh would make a lovely Algae net. :-)
TIA

The mesh is fairly rigid, and you can make a box by sewing the edges together, but it's not transparent, and it needs a little help to sink and stay vertical. So if you want to be able to see the lotus, you might be further ahead with a tank divider, or make a frame and cover it with a coarser mesh. I've got some garden netting here that's got ~ 1" square mesh to it. It's made of fine black plastic threads, so it's not to hard to see through. You can have some if you want. You can cut away most of a plastic jug or similar for a frame.
If you want a delicious treat for your goldfish, I'd be delighted to give them 2-3 cups of duckweed and giant duckweed.
Another possibility would be to take a 2 liter transparent plastic juice jug or 4 liter distilled/spring water jug, cut some holes in it for water circulation, and cut most of the bottom out for the plant. You could use some pebbles to hold it down or attach a suction cup or two.

Yeah, I've got some bird netting too, but I know someone would stick their nose where it did not belong. Maybe I'll bend some plexiglass.
The GF would enjoy the DW and I've got some free snails in return. :-0 Seriously have to reduce the Apples and ABNs so I can get back to some other fish.

How about a tank divider made of plastic egg crate?

I was considering some lighting grid, but the depth would block too much light.

"I want to put a cage around my Lotus to keep the GF out"
Personally, if I were you, I would talk to the girlfriend first. I've been married a while now, but back in the day, I never had problems with GFs attacking and eating my aquarium plants, once I had explained how much they meant to me.
Needlepoint mesh is really useful, but very pliable.
