View Full Version : Snow again in Vancouver

Well, you folks elsewhere in the country can chuckle once again. It's snowing here in the Vancouver area once again (at least it is in New Westminster. ) Out of curiosity I checked the weather network and it says 'light rain'... Hah! That's probably at the airport (where the highest point is 12 ft above sea level).
Now which one of you sent this snowy white gift our way? Hmm? :err: Thanks but we don't want it... take it back!

I was walking the 4 dogs and felt all of 2 snowflakes over the span of the hour and no more after that...it poured rain later on though.

It was snowing here yesterday morning. On Friday Abbotsford got a couple of centimetres. I work with someone who lives there and she thought she woke up in a strange place!
By 10:00 AM yesterday all the snow had stopped and it was raining. Thank goodness, I can't stand travelling to work in the snow .

Stayed cold though, for here - I'm rarely cold and was actually chilly walking the kid home from the dentist.:Holiday-1:

OH MY GOODNESS! I walked past the window to go to the kitchen and it looked a bit cloudy outside so I pulled the blinds away and it's snowing! Lots and Lots of snow and it's sticking. I wonder what tomorrow will look like.

Just got home from work and you're right, it has started snowing again (& it's sticking). At least I was finished for the night and on my way home when it began. However, I get to to out & play it in again tomorrow (:err: drive in it, that is... such is the life of a lowly bus driver. )
Melody
Mar 1st 2007, 12:42 AM
Nothing lowly about that - you're the guy who takes all of the people who are too chicken to drive in the snow, or who don't want to deal with the traffic jams from accidents & over-cautious people.:Applaud:
CACAdmin
Mar 1st 2007, 01:21 AM
 Thanks, Melody. OK folks, just remember her words when you decide to yell at me when your bus is late because of the snow, OK? Please? Remember, we do our best but it's more important to get everybody where they're going safely than on time.
Melody

Do lots of ppl do that? I never yell at my bus driver!!! I'm just glad the bus gets there. I was stuck at ubc for an hour once b/c of the snow and the bus driver took us out of there even though he was off work already b/c he didn't want us to get stuck. I think you guys are awesome!

It snowed here most of the day and now it is freezing rain.
If we had busses here I would be using them in this weather, and would never yell at the bus driver even the ones that tell us to take our weather back.
Safe driving everyone!

Freezing rain is a zillion times worst than snow - so dangerous. :wideeyed:

Not lots of people. Most people are just appreciative that a bus does show up and we do our best to get them where they are going. However, there are jerks out there like the one a while back during the snow when I was running late, with a full busload of 'paying' passengers, after inquiring where I go, then has the nerve to say, "What? I gotta pay? followed by certain obscenities." He figured I ought to let him ride free because it was snowing.
I drive a lot of hills that often busses can't get up when the snow gets too bad, but I tell folks that I can't promise anything but I'll do my best to get them home. So far (luckily) I have managed to make all the hills... granted we end up running up to 15 minutes late but I do get people home.
It snowed here most of the day and now it is freezing rain.

I'd love to have you on my bus... and I might even forgive you for sending 'real winter' weather our way. ;) As for the freezing rain, we seldom get that sort of thing here and it's no fun... very treacherous! We do get a lot of ice here because temps often hover around the freezing mark (& some municipalities decide not to salt because rain is in the forecast & they've already blown their budget). Believe me, black ice, west coast drivers and a bus loaded with passengers does not make for fun driving!
But I love driving, enjoy the people (well most), take whatever weather mother nature throw my way... but you know, I'm ready for spring. ;)

sometimes when I am on the bus there are some jerks and most of the time all the passengers on the bus stick up for the bus drivers and tell them to shut up! :) so I hope you know how much you are appreciated! esp in crummy weather.
It must be really hard dealing with that behavior, ontop of the stress of driving in the snow etc, and not being on schedule. Do you guys get training for situations like that? and how about people who try to get on the bus without paying? how do you deal with that? have you ever had to kick someone off the bus?

Everybody and every situation is different, so you just deal with it accordingly. And yes, I will say a lot of passengers can be very helpful and supportive:yes:. People in general are really nice but there are always a few jerks to be dealt with... and they're not always the ones you might think would be trouble.

Well, Calgary is known for having some pretty crazy weather! I'm sure you're looking forward to the weekend and all that snow disappearing... however, if it warms up that quickly you'll probably have lots of mini-lakes forming everywhere for the snowmelt.:wideeyed:
I live here in Vancouver because we normally get very little snow and moderate temps. (Originally from Montreal, I know all about snow and cold. Brrrrrrr:Holiday-1:... No thanks!) I accept the tradeoff here of lots of rain and very little sun in the winter but we've had everything this winter (I think we set some records for snow, lack of sun, windstorms, rain, etc., etc. ) ENOUGH!
On that note, however, I do wish everyone across the country a nice warm, early spring.

I was only in Tuk once, but I had a Lineman there that I had to talk to daily so he had his orders from headquarters. I don't know how people live there. I think a town of 3000, give or take, is the smallest I could handle in Northern isolation. No wonder most employers paid for a trip 'out' at least once/year.

Sure they do - they're just sold in blocks of ice  .
The North was very good to me. My company heard I wanted to go into management and waved their magic wand - suddenly I was being sent out, all expenses paid, to the same managment seminars/conventions that my boss was going to. They paid for me to go to night school for Management Studies too.
Fantastic place for people without children to get a great start. Work experience in good jobs that pay well and opportunity knocking all the way. With kids its a tad more tricky, what with the lack of decent child care & social issues for starters.
Unless things have changed, my Son will be entitled to have his education paid for if he returns North to work... I think for two years. He was born there. I had a friend with two daughters who did that very thing.
