View Full Version : The next easiest Shrimp is....

I'd like to expand my Shrimp collection but I want something that is easy, breedable, and popular enough that I won't be stuck with a zillion Shrimp that nobody wants...lol.

To be honest, I haven't had much luck with other species. Tiger Shrimp died almost as soon as they got into my water. The Crystal Reds did ok for awhile but slowly died off. I don't fuss over them at all because they're not really my thing, they're my Son's thing.

I've done well with the Taiwan Blue & Cherries - must be tough Shrimp. Gave away the Blues though - the kid had buddies that liked them  . Anything else I should try that's worth trying? Or maybe someone can shed some light on why the others didn't thrive. They were far from neglected but really had no special care either.

Thanks!

Hello,
I have some ghost shrimp and they are pretty fun and easy.
I got mine for $.89 at a petsmart in Calgary, but have seen them at other pet shops for about $2.
One was carrying eggs when I bought them. I separated her into a 1 gal tank with a mystery snail. (the snail droppings are supposed to create insuforia for baby food) after the eggs were dropped from the female, I put her back in the regular tank. I also put micro food (for fry) in for the babies and now there are at least 8 tiny shrimp in the tank!
There is lots of info about breeding them on the internet as well. (also called glass shrimp)
They are interesting as they are all clear and you can see the little eggs under their bodies.
Other than seaparating the female for the babies, I haven't done any other special care as they scavenge for food. I do add a little aquarium salt to my water.
I will be getting some more as soon as petsmart gets some more in stock!:spinny:

Welcome to the board Krista, glad you jumped right in. For some reason I thought Ghost Shrimp were difficult to breed in captivity - not sure where I got that notion though...lol. My Son likes them actually so its definitly something we'll consider. Thanks for your suggestion & the details of your experience.

Lotsa snail addicts around here too ;) .

 That's gotta be a typo! :swoon:

There is an interesting article in this month's VAHC newsletter (http://www.fishopolis.com/vahc/newsletter_current.cfm) on Crystal Red Shrimp.

No typo - he has three other ad's just like it. Personally I like more red, even stripes, but apparently nobody asked me before grading them...lol. I'd kill those within hours or worry myself to death about them first. It would simply be no fun.

My baby ghost shrimp dissapeared... I'm not sure what happened but they didn't make it in the one gallon alone. I fed them micro foor but they just vanished. Maybe it was a water quality or maybe I accidently killed them when doing water changes... next time i'll leave them in the tank with lots of plants and see how that goes.

here is a pic of them at about a week old, they are to the left of the plant you can pretty much just see the blur of a body and two eyes.

I think I see them. Sorry to hear about your baby  . He may turn up yet though. According to what I've been reading, you may have more luck moving Mother and babies together into the tank.

Unfortunately they won't work for me because my Shrimp tanks double as fry tanks. Apparently Ghost Shrimp find fry quite tastey. :wideeyed:

Its been a week and no sign of babies, I counted 8 at one point.

Do you still have cherry shrimp? Enough to sell?
I'm thinking of trying those guys but haven't seen or heard of any in Calgary.

I've got a few Cherry Shrimp. Mine are just starting to breed ( finally ! ). If you just want a couple, I can spare you some.

That might work, I'm going on vacation this month, so I was thinking early april.
We'll talk later. Where did you get your shrimp from?

Hopefully, by April, I'll have a few more. My Cherry shrimp came from Mykiss ( He's a member here ) . If you PM him, he probably has lots available and he ships.

I have several dozen cherry babies as well as a few up and coming baby zebras....I am taking a bunch to the CAS auction on Sunday, but should have some available outside of that as well.

Thanks - they look like Tigers. Do you have a species name? I'm not familiar enough with the Shrimp species to rely on common names. I like the pattern... kinda reminds me of the stereotypical woman buying a car because she likes the colour  . Are they easy to keep?

Sadly, no species name, but they are very easy to keep.....just like the cherries. I also have some blues...just babies yet, though.
